(Transcript of a section of the General transferable skills report, 1998)
Strategy and target group (LLB year 1)
The importance of a skills course for all students embarking on the first year of the LLB programme has been recognised for approximately ten years. The first year skills programme has been continuously developed and forms the foundation for skills training and awareness as a compulsory module for all first year students.
Specific skills module or integration of skills?
The module provided is a specific skills course, but the value and scope for integration of skills into other areas of the degree programme is emphasised throughout. Students are encouraged to appreciate the transferable nature of skills and the value of such training at both the undergraduate and postgraduate stage.
Learning support
The module is delivered through a series of workshops. Each workshop is student centred and designed to draw out the essential elements and value of specific skills areas.
Specific skills
The workshop programme covers:
- an awareness of the value of skills training
- general presentations – all aspects both oral and written
- debating
- research including Lexis training
- drafting
- a general overview of the skills of the advocate in the context of the work of the courts
- mooting
- client counseling
- negotiation
